Preparing to go on a vacation at the local beach? Or maybe a trip abroad? Okay, maybe even if you’re just on your way down to the convenience store. Wherever you’re headed, don’t forget to pick up your sunglasses on the way out!
Surprisingly, a lot of people assume that shades are merely a fashion statement, unaware that wearing sunglasses has actual benefits. Here are 5 reasons why you should start wearing sunglasses:
Prevent Cataracts and other eye problems caused by UV Rays
According to the World Health Organization, a lot of people go blind due to cataracts. Cataracts are caused by too much UV exposure. It causes the lens of your eyes to become progressively opaque which in turn causes your vision to become blurred. Try not to expose your eyes to too much sunlight; it’s dangerous to your health! The risk of going blind or getting eye cancer is real, folks! There are other eye conditions you should also be aware of as well, such as:
- Eye sunburn or Photokeratitis – Eyes will appear swollen, bloodshot and becomes light sensitive. In extreme cases you could lose eyesight for up to 48 hours. This is usually caused by brief but intense exposure to UV rays.
- Surfer’s eye or Pyterygium – This is an abnormal growth on the surface of your eyes. It causes your eyes to become itchy and irritated. Usually it can be removed through surgery but it may or may not come back. This is usually caused by long term exposure to UV rays.
- Macular Degeneration – It is the death of cells in your retina due to malnutrition, genetic heredity and UV exposure. It destroys a person’s central vision. This is usually a problem encountered by the older generation.
Prevent your eyes from going dry.
Keep the strong winds from drying your eyes while on the commute! Sunglasses will be extremely helpful especially to people who wear contact lenses — rejoice, as there’s no need to repeatedly apply eye drops. Just put on your sunglasses, sit back, and enjoy the scenery with the wind blowing your on face.
Keep your eyes covered from dust and other debris.
No one likes getting dust in their eyes. Aside from it being extremely uncomfortable, we can’t help but rub our eyes continuously, which can cause irritation or bruising. Eyes are very sensitive and could easily be damaged, so they should always be protected from dirt and grime and, yep, even from ourselves. Keep debris from getting into your eyes with sunglasses.
Prevent harsh glares from impairing your vision
See clearly even with the sun glaring down on you. Shades will help you see properly without squinting or straining your eyes. This is important especially when you are driving — driving is a dangerous enough activity, and the driver not being able to see properly due to the sun’s glare increases the risk of road accidents even more.
Look trendy and cool
Look absolutely fashionable and trendy as you tour the local spots feeling like a model or an actor with your favourite shades on! Something about sunglasses can make almost anyone experience a burst of confidence.
Sunglasses aren’t just used to look stylish and cool! It is essential for eye health. So whether you’re travelling or just walking around the city streets, always keep a pair in your bag. You never know when you’ll need it.
